Do you know how to express and understand your emotions?

Do you know how to express and understand your emotions?

Being intelligent about your emotions is one of my favourite short definitions of emotional intelligence.

Emotions tell us so much useful, honest information, but in order to understand them we have to ‘translate’ them into a language that our logical, thinking brain can understand. Many of us have never learned to be emotionally literate in this way, so why not think of your emotions in terms of pictures or music? If you are angry what does it look like? What piece of music would it be? How about happiness, jealousy, irritation, excitement, calmness and boredom? What pictures and colours come into your mind? What music is playing in your head when you experience this emotion - are you hearing Wagner, Prince, Metallica or Norah Jones?
